The effects of cell phones in the busness workplace - Research Paper exemplificationIt is based on observation and anecdotal evidence, with some recourse to published material as cited. Chapter 1 The strengths of Cell Phones in the Business work Early adopters of the cellular phone, as it was originally and briefly known, pioneered a new-fashioned era of business communication, even if at some considerable expense. Not outstandingly for breakthrough technology, the cost of a Motorola DynaTac in 1983 was $3,995.00, which, in todays terms and taking inflation into account, would be in the region of $8,500. (1) The cost of acquisition, however, was general perceived to be outweighed by the benefits of the new technology and the status conferred on those who used it. The race to produce more affordable, smaller and more versatile handsets for a market that could only grow is till showing little sign of slowing. Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Grew 17 Per Cent in offset Q uarter 2010. (2) Figures released in 2002 by the International Telecommunication Union (3) reveal that, in terms of units per person, Taiwan topped the list at 106.45 per 100, with Burma at the bottom. burden average was 59.3 per 100, with the United States at 48.81. So we can safely say that the cell phone changed business for the better as soon as it became clear that to not have one was a disadvantage. Let us call this Effect One, the addition of a vital tool to the company toolbox, sometimes one you had to earn by distinction until the price enabled the purchase of a handset for personal use. It needed little to no effort to sell this new, influential symbol of progress and dynamism. It also introduced a set of changes in etiquette and behavior, both in and beyond the workplace, which can be referred to as Effect Two. Effect Two, like most changes to social norms, started with a minority who took on the role of being at the forefront of change, leading the charge, brushing past the fuddy-duddies on the room to wherever it was they were going. And, for a while at least, the alpha males in the workplace were the ones who got the cell phones, and who changed them as soon as the next model with better features came along. The sojourn waited their turn and resigned themselves to being followers. Here, like a well-cut suit, an expensive wristwatch and hand finished shoes, was an accessory that set the owner apart, allowed them to adopt a different attitude. Indeed, the new power prop had a far more immediate effect than good tailoring or discrete and tasteful jewelry, as its appeal to galore(postnominal) lay in its ability to be the opposite of discrete and sophisticated. Chapter 2 Now, whereas in conventional ordered, civilized workplaces it would once have been considered rude or contrasted to ignore, interrupt loudly or suddenly terminate a conversation with a colleague, the

Case Analysis The International Committee of the Red Cross - Essay ExampleThe case study demonstrates how the ICRC establish a schema that promoted employees into management and ensure that there is continuity of the values and tradition of the organizations method of management (Forsythe, 2005). The restructuring provided a new attribute of management in ICRC, which would ensure that employees are encouraged to work for the company. The case study illustrates the importance of continuity in an organization and establishing a system of forward motion as a method of motivating employees. Initial Problems in Management Prior to 2007, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) utilized a unfortunate structure of management, which did not foster any form of development. The problem stemmed from the ideology of employees working in the same group for less than a year. From the on-set, it was bare that the companys strategy was flawed, because employees were often re-assigned or placed in new teams on regular intervals, which limited their ability to develop important skills germane(predicate) to the ideologies of the organization (Deresky, 2008). ... The latter can identify a problem of a person, give advice and the person can change their behavior. This illustrates development using a co-worker. However, eer changing groups will limit the aspect of a person being able to receive tips or advice on how they can change certain elements of how they operate. This was the main problem that demonstrated the poor management strategy implemented by the ICRC prior to 2007. (Merson, 2006) Another problem stemmed from the aspect of bias in the organization. ICRC was in the beginning considered a Swiss Company, hence their focus related to having Swiss individuals in high positions in the organization, regardless of qualification. This proved to be a arrest for several employees, who were eager to move on if they found promotion close to impossible. The bias influenced the development of the organization, because on Swiss individuals had a chance of becoming managers in the company. Another problem was ICRC was gender bias. ICRC focused on promoting male individuals to higher positions in the organizations, the Swiss males were the only individuals that would last for a long time in the field before gaining promotion in the firm, and it limited the womens ability to develop any adequate experience in the field. The main management strategy focused on Swiss males, and it pushed other employees to work short-term for the ICRC. (Forsythe, 2005) The Restructure of Management In 2007, ICRC developed a strategic plan, which was intended to last the avocation three years. The organization focused on improving the Human Resource Management (HRM) to employ quality managers. ICRC concentrated on three aspects accountability, multidiscipline, and

Police Character and Ethics - Essay ExampleWith this in mind, in terms of law enforcement, the Slippery Slope theory/philosophy represents the initial movement downward into undesirable actions which will make it difficult for the individual to terminate these actions especially if they experience no negative consequences for the behavior. The Slippery Slope is linked closely with gratuities received by law enforcement officers. One notable Florida police sergeant defines police gratuities as the receipt of free meals, services and discounts (Andrews, 2004). Some might offer that taking such gratuities from local community members as a convey you for quality police service is unethical. This argument suggests that once an officer has accepted such gratuities, it might be reasonably concluded that the giver may face certain favors in exchange for that free, proverbial cup of coffee. Under the Slippery Slope argument, favors in exchange for gratuities can include business referrals such as using specific towing companies, ambulance services or repair shops (Andrews). As the officer moves further down this slippery slope, becoming accustomed to this unethical behavior, they might direct be tempted to remove desired items from crime scenes, evidence lockers, or any other environment in which they have access and can get by with the action of theft. The Slippery Slope does not necessarily suggest that all officers are going to be corruptible, only that the simple action of taking a gratuity as a gesture of appreciation can lead to an overwhelming series of negative consequences which jeopardize community, legal and social interests. In 2001, subsequently the World Trade Center incident, community citizens across the nation were offering free meals, free admission to amusement parks, etc. all in an strain to salute their law enforcement heroes (Andrews). The Slippery Slope argument might suggest that officers would become accustomed

Malachi Stacks in the Matchmaker Essay Example for Free

Malachi Stacks in the Matchmaker EssayIn the world of business in that location are always those men and women who are not recognized for the contributions they make to certain products, projects, or works regular though with protrude them the result would never exist. Nonetheless, these the great unwashed go on with their daily lives working hard, knowing that totally(prenominal) their dedication is going to benefit others and not them. Yet, they cant blame the big companies for not being recognized, because these men and women do this willingly. They are fully aware that their actions serve a purpose to the greater rather than a personal one, and for them that is teeming. Such mickle do not need the recognition of others because they themselves know the importance of their actions. One example of such a human being is portrayed in Thornton unquiets The Matchmaker. His name is Malachi Stacks, and though he only shows up on stage two or three times, he is the one who give s the entire deed meaning. Malachi is the person who sets into motion a series of events that completely change not only the characters, but also their lives. With this character, Thornton Wilder takes what used to be just a regular farce comedy and gives it meaning which makes all the difference, Malachi Stacks makes all the difference.Thornton carefully crafted the role of Stacks in such a way that do him distinct from the rest of the characters. Even with being in his fifties, sadness and depression are entirely absent from his life. E rattling line spoken by him has a joyful feeling to, and almost puts a smile on the readers face. Even at times when he is being put prevail over by Mr. Vandergelder, joy is felt in his words. Wilder makes Malachi seem like a little adolescent, who has not yet been exposed to reality, and still thinks the world is perfect. However, all this is just an image that Malachi establishes for his own purposes. He makes people believe he can be trusted by pretending to be respectful and chase orders. Malachi creates a relationship between himself and the others, especially Mr. Vandergelder, which makes him seem gullible and easy to control when in fact it is he who controls them. This sort of maneuver is portrayed very well in his outgrowth scene with Mr. Vandergelder, in which he says Youll never regret it, Mr. Vandergelder. Youll never regret it. It is such a simple line, and yet there is so much there. Malachi makes it seem like he is just another man who is happy about getting a job, when in reality he is masking his true intentions behind these innocent words. The real reason Malachi is happy to have gotten the job, is because he now has the ability to fix the contrast which exists between Vandergelder and the others. rightfulness be told, Malachi is actually the only individual who see this flaw amongst the characters, and he knows it should not be there. Therefore, by formulating this sort of innocent personality, Malach i Stacks gives himself the perfect probability to finally bring equality into the lives of the characters. It all happens in Act III when Mr. Vandelgelder is having his coat taken off as his purse filled with specie travel to the ground. Malachi, knowing that the primary reason for such inequality amongst the characters is their financial situations, takes his chance to balance the scale. However, he does not make a big deal out of it. Malachi simply takes the purse, asks Vandelgelder if its his, and since the response is no he gives it to Cornelius. Its very quick, subtle, and seems like the right thing to do. Yet, even though what he did was so simple, it was enough to bring equality into their lives and he knew that. By asking Vandergelder whether or not the purse was his, Malachi tested him to check if he deserves the money. For in his short little soliloquy that he has right after picking up the purse, Mr. Stacks says The law is there to protect topographic point, but- sure the law doesnt care whether a property owner deserves his property or not, and the law has to be corrected. Therefore when he asked Vandelgelder Did you drop something the real question was Are you worthy of all this money that you have. Vandelgelder responding quickly said no, and that was enough for Malachi to know that the money deserved to be in the hands of someone else, Cornelius. It is also at this point that inequality begins to slowly disappear between the characters. First, Cornelius and Barnaby are able to accept for their expensive dinner and truly impress Mrs. Malloy along with Minnie. Then Mrs. Levi finally tells Mr. Vandergelder what she thinks of him when he cannot pay the bill, and that is when he finally realizes what kind of man he is. Slowly through scenes like these, the balance between the characters begins to even out and by the end, everyone is happy, joyful, and most of all the inequality amongst them completely vanishes all thanks to Malachi Stacks.Though T hornton chose Malachi to be the tool for equilibrium amongst the characters by having him redistribute the superfluities, the part also is important when it comes to the moral of the story. Of course, after reading The Matchmaker it safe to say that there are multiple lessons to be learned from this play, but one of the main ones shows up in Malachis monologue. Right after discussing the entire matter of redistributing property, Thornton has the character talk about how one man should not have more(prenominal) than one vice. In fact, he ends his line with the words One vice at a time. Now this entire concept might seem abstract, because after all even in todays world vices are looked down upon. However, Thornton shows what two vices can do to a man by having Malachi use Vandergelders wrongs against him.His first true frailty is that in his own world Mr. Vandergelder sees himself a king, where no one can stop him because he has so much money. The secondment is his cacoethes for mo ney. In fact, his first vice comes from this one, because to him a person who has more money has more authority. So instead of merely having Vandergelder destroy himself through his vices, Thornton uses Malachi to show how having more than one vice is recipe for destruction. First, he uses Vandergelders attitude towards himself to gain his trust, by pretending to be loyal to him. Next, once Vandergelder thinks he has him under his control, Malachi uses the second frailty against him taking that which is most precious, his money, and giving it away. By using both of these flaws in his masters character, Mr. Stacks brings Vandergelder into a state of despair where he has lost everything that made him, a King in his own mind. One man. Three Scenes. Yet without him, The Matchmaker would never be the same. Thornton Wilder made a smart decision in imgaging such a character, because he is developed in such a way that his importance to the whole play is not realized until the conclusion. For with just a simple action of handing off a purse to Cornelius, Malachi made a ripple effect which changed the course of the entire takings and made all the difference. Malachi Stacks made all the difference.

Providing Safety Measures within Schools Essay Example for Free

Providing Safety Measures within Schools EssaySchool violence is not just a recent tragedy. In fact, the earliest kn birth United States (U. S. ) school hit called Pontiacs Rebellion School Massacre took place on July 26, 1764 in Pennsylvania (Wikipedia). These ill-fated events are products of many different factors such as bullying, revenge, and even mental issues. Unfortunately, school violence has be obtain a much prevalent occurrence in society today. However, because of the un copen and rather unexpected motives of the perpetrators, an end to school violence cannot, in all actuality, happen. Certainly, there are procedures uncommitted to prevent occurring violence.Through the use of change magnitude screening and unafraidty measures, school violence can be greatly diminished, improve the quality of the nations education, and restore faith in administrators. School violence has plagued many areas of not only the U. S. , but also other parts of the world. However, a numb er of the strike attacks accommodate occurred right here in the U. S. , Columbine High School, for example. April 20, 1999 marked the date of fifteen deaths at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. devil teenage submarines took the lives of fourteen students and one t apieceer (Listverse). This school tragedy led to an increased emphasis on tribute at schools across the U. S. (SFGate). The April 16, 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech claimed the lives of thirty-three victims and was named the deadliest shooting by a single gunman in U. S. history. Bath School in Michigan fell victim to cardinal deaths and was given the title of the deadliest mass school murder in U. S. history (Listverse). In recent history, Connecticut unfortunately experienced a shooting of its own at Sandy Hook Elementary where twenty-eight young children and adults were victim to a deranged gunman on December 14, 2012 (The Inquisitr). But certainly, we cannot forget the February 27, 2012 shooting at Char don High School that rocked Ohio (SFGate). More and more schools around the nation are stepping up school safety measures to ensure the security of students. Undoubtedly, the most usually selected safety measure is limited or controlled access to the school in such ways as to lock and monitor school doors. Metal detectors, security cameras, and limited social networking access are more commonly being used to monitor and restrict student and visitor behaviors (U. S. Department of Education).Monitoring and lapse common areas such as the cafeteria, gym, hallways, and parking lot is a significant safety measure usually practiced by schools (NASPonline). School resource officers, guards, and divest law enforcement officers may not always need to be present, but should always be available. Staff members should monitor all guests by greeting each and all person who comes to the door. Counselors and psychologists should always be available to students so that they know they have someon e to trust and be able to anonymously report jealous activity (Gumbrecht NASPonline).Crisis plans and preparedness training should be accessible for all stave members along with threat assessment procedures. The promotion of obedience of school rules and a safe school environment should be present at all times for the safety of the students (NASPonline). Schools should conduct regular drills such as intruder, weather, and fire for student sensation (Gumbrecht). A responsible and safe school always implicates school-community partnerships and school safety incident data to keep the public informed about new procedures (NASPonline). in that respect are a number of structural prevention suggestions available. The most frequently used structural methods are locked doors and security systems. However, more advanced structural preventions dwell single, prominent entryways for guests and students to enter reduced landscaping to eliminate hiding spots shifted restrooms remote from entr yways moved major mechanical and electrical systems keyless entry systems for staff and faculty and elaborate announcement systems for drills and instructions (Gumbrecht).Panic buttons are available for $5,000 and operate on single police dispatch lines that send all available units to the school in case of an emergency. The buttons can be located in each individual classroom or in different regions of the schools. These structural suggestions come at a price but are well worth the investments (Scott). Because of the seemingly reoccurring school violence trend, many school districts have contemplated active shooter training and arming teachers. Even though this might seem like a good idea, there may very well be blackball consequences.Instead, most school administrators opt for the more common school entry policies and emergency manuals for all staff. Newer safety ideas are being introduced into school districts such as Mohawk, Ellwood, and Shenango in Pennsylvania. These districts installed computerized systems that scan the drivers licenses of all visitors to identify anyone convicted of crimes against children (New Castle News). Administrators have many accessible guidelines for communicating with students, their parents, and the public.Conversations with students should be developmentally appropriate and include guidelines for violence. Administrators should keep in mind the cultures, traditions, religion, and family values of students and keep the focus on normal routines and activities. Parents should be made aware of all violence conversations with students. The children must know that schools are safe places and there is a difference between reporting and tattling, they must be observant and report what they see. Students must also realize that every so often, people commit wrong acts, but violence is never a solution.Open communication between parents and their children is key the students should know to stay away from weapons. Also, the school staff must stress the understanding of possibility versus probability students should always know that they are safe in school. These guidelines are important for administrators to broadcast to their student body and public (NASPonline). Without a doubt, school violence has made national headlines. In December, the NRA announced the National School Shield Program. They have issued a report on how they believe schools can prevent further gun violence (Gumbrecht). The NRA will present policy proposals and resources to law enforcement, lawmakers, school officials, and the public. Because there is declining back for strict gun regulations, law enforcement officials will prepare armed guards that state and local officials will alter (Sperry and Wallace). A higher portion of high schools and eye schools require drug testing for athletes and extracurricular activities badges and picture identifications for students and teachers random dog sniffs and contraband sweeps and security cameras for monitoring the school building and surrounding premises.84 percent of high schools, 73 percent of middle schools, and 51 percent of elementary schools use security cameras for surveillance. A higher percent of high schools and middle schools have electronic emergency notification systems and structured, anonymous threat reporting systems. A lower percent of high schools control access to buildings during school hours, prohibit jail cell phone usage and text messaging, and require uniforms (U. S. Department of Education). Unfortunately, school violence is on the rise. Children should not have to be afraid to go to school in fear of experiencing a fateful attack.By no means can there ever be assumptions made that attacks cannot happen just anywhere no area is completely immune to violence. The public cannot be naive. As much as the thought of an attack is hard to comprehend, the possibility must always be in the back of the mind. There are countless ways to be prepared school admini strators just need to take action. Through the use of increased screening and safety measures, school violence can be greatly diminished, improve the quality of the nations education, and restore faith in administrators

Plant Layouts of Production of Isoamyl AlcoholPLANT FACILITIES LAYOUTThe economic construction and efficient operation of a process unit impart depend on how good the whole kit and equipment specified on the process flow sheet is laid out. A facility is regarded as a build or a precinct. The process units and ancillary buildings should be laid out to give the intimately economical flow of materials and personnel around the site. Hazardous processes must be laid at a synthetic rubber distance from other buildings. Consideration must also be given to the future expansion of the site. A layout of a building is the map that shows the location of the building around the isoamyl alcohol congeal such as car park, cafeteria, mosque, stores, workshop, laboratory and others. The most important enter workers need to know is fire assembles point which a designated place where people have been told to wait after evacuating a building in the event of a fire or other emergency. A model fa cilities layout should be able to provide an ideal relationship between naked as a jaybird materials, equipment, manpower and final harvest-time at minimal cost under safe and comfortable environment. According to Riggs, the overall clinical of plant is to design a physical arrangement that most economically meets the requirement output sum of money and quality. Irregular plant layout provide disturb the flow production and relationship among management and other staff member. The objective of the plant layout isProvide a overbearing process in the plant.Reduce material handling cost.Reduce hazard to personnel.Increase employee morale.Reduce accident in the plant. To provide optimum space to organize equipment and facilitate movements of goods.Figure 1 Plant layout of isoamyl alcohol production plantFigure 1 above shows the plant layouts of production of isoamyl alcohol and the important element in this layout. The fire assembly area is important to check all employ ees safe from the incident. This location is choose by localise on a safe distance from the building and the space is large enough for all the workers in the plant to gather. Storage store refers to the controls the inflow quantity and quality of the raw material supply which are chlorine, sodium hydroxide and pentane in a high quality. This important to avoid excess amount of raw material in the plant because buying to many raw material will results tremendous space and cost to maintain them. In this section will involve the recording of raw material inflow and outflow in the plant in order to reduce the cost of operation. This storage tanks that containing hazardous materials is sited at least 70m (200 ft) from the site boundary and the main storage areas are placed between the loading and unloading facilities and the main process unit. Laboratories are placed well away from potentially hazardous processes. In order to obtain high quality of the isoamyl alcohol production, the ra w material supply needs to achieve the condition level that has been set in this company. This area will running the test for production line and raw material supply. Every raw material that being supply for production area need to be passed a quality test to control the quality of the product. All the analysis equipment will be located in the laboratory.
